Visit Indiana Golf is mapping out road trips around the state of Indiana for you to enjoy the game of golf, eat delicious food, and make unforgettable memories! For the next several weeks, we will be sharing a number of suggested memorable Indiana golf trips. Known as Indiana’s Fairway Drives, each trip is a perfect getaway for golfers of any skill level who are looking for a new adventure.
Travel is permitted, and golfing is great for mental and physical health, but it is still best to practice social distancing as we continue to fight COVID-19. Not every single Indiana business is choosing to be open right now, so call ahead or check their social media accounts before visiting. Please take precautions, plan ahead, and follow CDC and local guidelines.
The Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame is a links-style course that was recently named the #5 Top Course You Can Play in Indiana by GolfWeek. The Warren Course, which is comfortably nestled on 250 acres of Indiana woods and expertly preserved as a wildlife habitat, received the coveted Audubon International Certification. Lush fescue fairways, softly rolling terrain, and the golden dome in the background make this course a beauty to behold. Even though it is the most recent host of the US Senior Open, the Warren Course is friendly to players of all skill levels, as it entertains four sets of tee boxes. The red fescue, heather, and other native grasses that adorn the course are thoughtfully landscaped for maximum playability.
Blackthorn Golf Club offers a par 72, 7,136-yard layout with four sets of tees, proving to be a strategic test for golfers of all abilities. Broad fairways framed by 78 bunkers, wetlands, ponds, and native prairie grasses lead to subtly contoured and swept-up tiered bentgrass greens. The practice facility consists of two acres of bentgrass tees, realistic target greens, and a short game area for putting, chipping, and bunker play. The course clubhouse is a beautiful Irish-Cottage that sets upon the rolling, naturally contoured, and heavily wooded 226-acre campus.
This next South Bend course blends perfectly with the surrounding natural landscape of farmland, wooded areas, and water in South Bend. Elbel Park Golf Course was designed to showcase the natural beauty of Mud Lake. Twisting and turning around the lake and through the trees, Elbel Park Golf Course is sure to give all players a challenging yet exciting round. Golfers will enjoy the bent grass greens, bluegrass fairways, and a few exciting water hazards. This par 72-course distances range from 5,383 to 6,885 yards.
We encourage you to explore all the city has to offer on your South Bend Golf Trip. In addition to impressive golf courses, South Bend boasts a beautiful destination where you can find adventure – and some remarkable autos, too! Take some time off the course during the day to explore the Studebaker National Museum. Immerse yourself in one of the most compelling stories of the industrial era. Follow the arc of the Studebaker Corporation from its modest beginning as a small blacksmith shop to a producer of iconic automobiles known worldwide for their breathtaking design. The museum is also home to the largest Presidential Carriage collection in the nation.
During your stay, we recommend spending some time at the Four Winds Casino. The casino offers action-packed games, sizzling nightlife, award-winning dining, and one-of-a-kind entertainment. There are several delicious dining options at the casino for you to consider. For a more upscale dining experience, we recommend Copper Rock Steakhouse. Savor a USDA Prime 42-day dry-aged steak, succulent cold water lobster, gourmet desserts, and more, paired with a selection from an award-winning wine list.
Located right in downtown South Bend, the East Race Waterway is a fun summer splash! This is the first artificial white water rafting course in North America. Families and experts alike love the East Race rapids. Raft down the St. Joseph River during the day, then at night, take a stroll along the river and enjoy the South Bend River Lights. Color dances from two interactive light sculptures on either side of the river, amplifying the majestic cascade of water, joined with a third sculpture highlighting the exquisite “Keeper of the Fire” statue, and symbolically uniting the two sides of the river. This is a sight to see, and you will not want to miss it!
The East Race Waterway will close for the season after September 13, 2020. Due to construction in Seitz Park, the entire Light Forest for the South Bend River Lights is being removed and put into storage. Once Seitz Park is complete in 2021, the items will be returning.
South Bend not only boasts impressive greens and exciting nightlife, but it also is home to several delicious eateries. We recommend LaSalle Grill as the perfect date night dining spot. Guests will fall in love with the delightful American-style cuisine that is artfully and dramatically presented to the table. This Four-Diamond, award-winning downtown establishment is a must-try.
Another fantastic dining option and local favorite is Bruno’s Pizza. This family-owned establishment is locally owned and serves up the tastiest Italian-style pizza you’ve ever had. They also offer salads and subs. Dine-in, carryout, and delivery are available.
There’s a lot to do around South Bend, so consider making your South Bend Golf Trip a multi-day getaway! Plan your Fairway Drive Road Trip to South Bend and stay at Aloft South Bend, a chic downtown hotel.
